Description: In order to successfully play various MP4 files on PS Vita, a widely used solution is to  be recommended.

Today, handheld game consoles highly popular with young people, PS Vita is one of them. As a great portable entertainment device, not only play a variety of games, but also play videos. Before a trip or a business trip, you will think of coping some MP4 videos to PS Vita for playing, which is so convenient. But when you copy MP4 videos to PS Vita, PS Vita sometimes displayed: “ This file is not compatible with the system” . Why can’t play MP4 videos to PS Vita? Keep reading.

Before transfering MP4 video to PS Vita, you might have read through the PS Vita manuals and found that you should get your video into PS Vita video formats as below:

  • MPEG-4 Simple Profile Level 6, Maximum 1280 x 720 pixels, AAC
  • H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Baseline/Main/High Profile Level 4.0, Maximum 1080p, AAC

Basically a video file, or more specifically its container, can contain numerous variations of what would-be the video. Usually MP4 files are in H.264 codec, which is good, but the Vita only supports up to Level 4.0 High (a set of guidelines for playing back the content). Anything above 4.0 High (there's also lower profiles, "Main" and "Baseline", which are supported) the Vita will not play. The easiest way to figure this out would be to use MediaInfo or open the file in your favorite media player, such as MPC-HC or VLC, and viewing the file information/metadata. 10-bit content is also another profile (High 10), like High, which is not compatible. This can be dealt with during the encoding process.

As for encoding the content, generally any program that has a preset profile will work.. However, if you dig deep you should find options to select the level and profile of the encode. It's also worth mentioning on the manual page that it says AAC, which is the audio codec. Generally you should be targeting this anyway in your encoder.

Therefore, if the MP4 video is not encoded with PS Vita compatible codec which is mentioned above, we will fail to stream MP4 to PS Vita even if successfully copied MP4 to PS Vita. In that case, we need to encode videos to PS Vita supported format MP4 like MPEG-4 /H.264 MP4. which is the easiest way.
